I first came across the curiosity that I have come to call Melontown in 2023, when camping outside the town of Green River, UT. I woke up in my car to find that I had parked next to a propane gas tank that had been painted to look like a watermelon, with a hand-lettered advertisement for Vetere Melons. The rest of that day I noticed melon paraphernalia popping ups all over town, in the restaurants, painted on the side of buildings. It always struck me as a little strange, this small town in the middle of the desert whose economy seemed to be built entirely by melon mongers.
