"Glancing, Cruising, Staring (I, II, III)" examines the queer experience through the silent yet charged language of looking. Part of the larger Bird Circuit series, these paintings reference the covert network of mid-century LGBTQ+ bars in New York and Los Angeles, venues named after colorful birds that quietly signaled safety and belonging for the queer community. Within this coded world, where identity was both hidden and revealed, nonverbal communication became essential. These works explore that tension, depicting birds whose gazes embody the nuances of cruising, desire, and recognition, acts of seeking, connecting, and claiming space without words.
